A smart city is an urban eco-system concept.
This is a new way to built and to think the city.
To be « smart » a city needs to combine differents criteria :
- Smart Citizens
- Smart Mobility
- Smart living
- Smart economy
- Smart environment
- Smart governance
A Smart City is not exclusively a city of technology proofs.
Indeed the city has to use the technology intelligibly to be
smart. It means to use it for the common goods, for the community.
« SMART CITIZENS »
For example, the city of London is been recognised for its technology use and its open database for citizens. Indeed the city made a database accessible to everybody calling all the citizens to collaborate, share pieces of information, and knowledge for everybody to understand and develop solutions to the city’s problems. « The London DataStore is a free and open data-sharing portal where anyone can access data relating to the capital. Whether you’re a citizen, business owner, researcher or developer, the site provides over 500 datasets to help you understand the city and develop solutions to London’s problems. Please do have a look around, and let us know what you think. »
« SMART MOBILITY »
The city of Singapore distinguished itself because of its smart city traffic management.
« Singapore has implemented a sophisticated Intelligent Transport System in addition to a number of transport initiatives – including free public transportation in pre-morning peak hours, a vehicle quota system, congestion charge and an extensive public transport system. »
This system is really interesting and sustainable : it allows the citizens to have a good fluency and efficiency in their move.
As well, Barcelona showed different innovations about the environment and Smart parking. Actually, in Barcelona, the citizens very often use this App called ApparkB. This app permits to renew the payment for the parking when your car is in blue or green zones, for example. Like so people don’t need anymore to go to the parking meters in the streets. At the end it mainly avoids useless movings, this is smart, practical and very efficient.
« SMART LIVING »
Smart living is the objective for the cities to be composed with cultural and educative infrastructures, to care about the security and the health of the citizens with various equipment.
« SMART ECONOMY »
Smart economy corresponds to the economic aspects of the city such as productivity of the companies, attractivity of the territory, the international dimension, and also the new economic models.
« SMART ENVIRONMENT »
A smart environment is related to the sustainability in the city. It combines energy consumption, green spaces in the city, the trash management, but also the biodiversity…
For example, New York city out-stand with its smart street lighting. The main objective of it is to replace the old city lighting bulbs with new LED light to reduce the consumption. Even if the new lights are more expensive than the old one, LED technology is barely more sustainable in a long term vision. « In New York City, USA, a USD 76 million retrofit of street lighting with LED will reduce lighting energy costs by 35% by 2019. »
« SMART GOVERNANCE »
« Smart Governance is about the future of the public services. It is about greater efficiency, community leadership, mobile working and continuous improvement through innovation. It is about improving democratic processes and transforming the ways that public services are delivered. It is about connecting data, people, and knowledge. »
In India, the Government started the « smart city mission » and planned to develop 100 cities all over the country making the cities citizen friendly and sustainable, such as satellite towns of larger cities and by modernizing the existing mid-sized cities.
A city is smart when it manages to combine all of this different features. A city is smart if it thinks over, for the future, for the citizens, and for the world. Nowadays none of the city is completely smart…But there are more and more examples of good achievements. Finally, the most important in a smart city seems to be the «smart citizens» because the people are the brain and the energy to make all the fields working.
